Climate Therapy: Marienbad's Healing Microclimate

Climate therapy in Marienbad: how the unique microclimate at 630m elevation with forest air and low allergens helps respiratory conditions.

Marienbad's Unique Microclimate

Mariánské Lázně (Marienbad) lies nestled in a sheltered valley basin at 630 metres elevation, surrounded by the dense forests of the Slavkov Forest (Kaiserwald). This exceptional geographical setting creates a unique microclimate that has been recognised as a healing resource in its own right since the 19th century, forming alongside the mineral springs, natural CO₂ gas and therapeutic peat the fourth natural healing resource of Marienbad.

The combination of moderate altitude, extensive coniferous forests and the sheltered valley position creates conditions that differ fundamentally from most Central European cities: the air is exceptionally pure, rich in phytoncides (antibacterial plant compounds) and low in allergens, fine particulates and industrial pollutants.

How Does Climate Therapy Work?

Climate therapy — also called open-air cure or aerotherapy — uses natural climatic conditions as a therapeutic tool. Its effects are based on several factors:

  • Pure forest air: The coniferous forests surrounding Marienbad release phytoncides — volatile organic compounds with antibacterial and immune-stimulating properties. Studies show that spending time in forest air significantly increases the number of natural killer cells in the blood.
  • Low allergen levels: The altitude and composition of the local flora ensure significantly lower exposure to house dust mites, pollen and mould spores compared to lowland regions.
  • Altitude stimulation: At 630m, the partial pressure of oxygen is slightly reduced, producing a gentle altitude stimulus: the body responds by increasing erythropoiesis (red blood cell production) and improving oxygen uptake.
  • Thermal stimuli: The alternation between cool forest air and warmer valley air trains the autonomic nervous system and strengthens the body's thermoregulation — a process known as "hardening".
  • Ionisation: The air near waterfalls and dense forests is rich in negative ions, which have mood-enhancing and stress-reducing effects.

Forms of Climate Therapy in Marienbad

1. Terrain Cure (Climate Walking Paths)

The centrepiece of Marienbad's climate therapy. Along a network of over 70 kilometres of marked walking paths, patients can undertake medically prescribed walks and hikes. The paths are divided into three difficulty levels — from flat promenade paths to more demanding forest trails with gradients. Speed, duration and route are individually determined by the spa physician.

2. Open-Air Rest Cures

Targeted rest in the forest air on specially arranged resting areas in the spa parks. This passive form of climate therapy is particularly suited for patients with limited mobility or during convalescence.

3. Outdoor Breathing Therapy

Guided breathing exercises in the pure forest air, led by trained therapists. The combination of conscious breathing and phytoncide-rich air is particularly effective for respiratory conditions.

Indications

Climate therapy is successfully used for:

  • Chronic respiratory conditions (bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, COPD)
  • Allergic conditions (hay fever, allergic asthma)
  • Recurring respiratory infections in children and adults
  • Cardiovascular conditions (arterial hypertension, coronary heart disease)
  • Exhaustion syndromes and burnout
  • Sleep disorders
  • Immune deficiency and increased susceptibility to infection

The Healing Forests of the Slavkov Forest

The Slavkov Forest (Kaiserwald) surrounding Marienbad is one of the best-preserved woodland areas in Central Europe. The area is designated as a Protected Landscape Area and encompasses extensive stands of spruce, pine and beech. Air quality is regularly monitored and meets the criteria for a recognised therapeutic climate resort — a distinction held by only a handful of locations across Europe. Since 2023, Mariánské Lázně has held the official designation of a Climatic Spa, confirming the exceptional quality of its air and its therapeutic potential.

Particularly recommended are the walking paths through the woodland areas north of the town, leading to the Kladská Nature Reserve — a raised peat bog with unique flora and exceptionally pure air.

Practical Information

Climate therapy is possible year-round, with each season offering its own advantages: spring and autumn are considered ideal for allergy sufferers, summer provides the most intense phytoncide concentration, and winter strengthens the immune system through cold stimuli. A climate therapy course ideally lasts 14-21 days to achieve lasting effects.

The terrain cure paths are accessible year-round and free of charge. For optimal therapeutic benefit, however, a medical consultation is recommended, during which an individual exercise plan is created that takes your health status and fitness level into account.
